Carilion Clinic, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM), and the Department of Surgery are seeking a fellowship-trained Surgical Oncologist to join our growing Division of Surgical Oncology in Roanoke, Virginia. This is an outstanding opportunity to become part of a thriving academic surgical oncology program consisting of three surgeons and four advanced practice providers, with exceptional opportunities for clinical practice, teaching, and research.
We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise or a strong interest in hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery and advanced gastrointestinal malignancies. The successful candidate will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary cancer program supported by advanced technology, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment capabilities, and the future Carilion Taubman Cancer Center, anticipated to open in 2027–2028.
About the Practice
Based at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, a 763-bed Level I Trauma Center and academic medical center, the Division of Surgical Oncology serves a population of more than one million people across a large rural and multi-state referral region. Surgical oncology services extend throughout the Carilion Clinic network, including:
- Carilion New River Valley Medical Center
- Carilion Giles Community Hospital
- Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital
- Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital
The practice offers an exceptionally broad clinical experience with exposure to the full spectrum of surgical oncology procedures, ranging from routine to highly complex cases. The division currently operates from a centralized clinic location, with plans for future regional growth and expansion.

Faculty actively participate in the education and mentorship of medical students, residents, fellows, and graduate students. Current trainees include General Surgery residents, Plastic Surgery residents, and an Advanced GI/MIS/Bariatric fellow.
This position includes a faculty appointment with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, with academic rank commensurate with experience.
Qualifications
Candidates must possess:
- MD or DO degree
- Board Certification or Board Eligibility in General Surgery
- Fellowship training in Surgical Oncology
- Preference for candidates with HPB and advanced gastrointestinal oncology expertise
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Interest in medical education, clinical research, and academic surgery

The posted salary range may not reflect the full value of the total compensation package. You are eligible to participate in the Tier 1 and Tier 2 bonus compensation programs to improve the minimum salary. Historical averages of Tier 1 and Tier 2 bonus earnings are included in the maximum salary . In addition, comprehensive benefits and pension offerings further enhance the overall rewards package.
